Cyril's Fish House forced to consolidate premises

Cyril's Fish House will be back for another season in Amagansett, but you may not recognize it. The popular roadside bar and restaurant will make severe modifications to its property in an agreement with the town of East Hampton. It's part of a long legal battle between the restaurant's owners and the town board over building and health violations, including complaints that crowds at Cyril's at times swelled out onto Montauk Highway, forcing motorists to slow to 10 mph to avoid striking pedestrians (no one has yet been injured).

The plan appears to be to return Cyril's to its original size in 1984. According to a senior Planning Department official that includes reducing the number of seats back to 62, 36 indoors and 26 outside. Other changes include removing the bar facing Montauk Highway and the patio between the restaurant and the roadway. A bar on the west side of the building will be turned into a counter and parts of the deck and stone seating area will also be removed.

Cyril's Fish House is located at 2167 on the Napeague Stretch in Amagansett. For more information visit cyrilsfishhouse.com.

Blue Canoe Oyster Bar & Grill closes in Greenport

In a surprising move, Blue Canoe Oyster Bar & Grill quietly announced on their Facebook page that they would not reopen this season. Calls to owner Terry Harwood, who also owns the Shelter Island restaurant Vine Street Cafe, were not returned.

The move is even more of a surprise after Blue Canoe announced this past winter they were taking a break to do some refurbishing and refinishing work.

The seafood eatery, located at 103 Third Street, has long been considered to be situated in one of the best locations in Greenport, with a view of the harbor as well as Shelter Island in the distance. Whoever takes over that space inherits a hell of a view.

The Chequit is open for the season

Life is returning to "The Chequit" on Shelter Island. The historic hotel has reopened their coffee cafe "White Hill", which debuted last year. This season the cafe will expand to include outdoor seating on the hotel's porch. White Hill is open Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Meanwhile the hotel's restaurant "Red Maple" just debuted a new spring menu, plus they're also serving a Saturday lunch and Sunday brunch.

The Chequit is located at 23 Grand Avenue in Shelter Island Heights. For More information visit thechequit.com.

                           What Is It?

After nearly 30 years in business, Dave's Grill in Montauk is closing it's doors on West Lake Drive. Owners Dave and Julie Marcley are staying put and will instead open the new Dave's Gone Fishing on East Lake Drive. The new spot replaces the now defunct Fishbar and will reportedly focus on smaller plates. 467 East Lake Drive, Montauk, N.Y. (631) 668-9190.

The North Fork Shack is ready for it's close-up! Fans have waited patiently for this Southold eatery to open its doors.
Co-owners Ryan Flatley and Samy Sabil both got their starts at The North Fork Table. Flatley as a line cook and Sabil as manager. Together they first founded Creative Courses Catering. The "Shack" is their first restaurant.
"I aim to bring the kind of creative, delicious food I used to cook at that award-winning restaurant to the North Fork Shack," said Flatley. "Except with a twist that makes it fun and more affordable."
With available seating for only about 16 people, the restaurant will be mostly takeout, serving a combination of casual farm and seafood-to-table fare. The North Fork Shack opens on Wednesday, April 27. 41150 County Road 48, Southold, N.Y. (631) 876-5566.

East Hampton's Harbor Bistro opened for their 11th season this week. Popular for their sunset views and American fare, this year the restaurant as well as the menu got a makeover. The space now has a more nautical look to it. New additions include a sunset Happy Hour on the lawn that will serve a variety of small plates. 313 Three Mile Harbor Road, East Hampton, N.Y. (631) 324-7300.

Southampton Publick House closed its doors at 40 Bowden Square last week and will soon move into the Drivers Seat on Jobs Lane in Southampton. There has been speculation as to whether the Drivers Seat could accomodate the restaurant and brewery, but owner Don Sullivan said the new space would hold the restaurant and bar, while the beer would continue to be brewed at the old location for now. Sullivan has said that he wants to expand Publick House's brewery operation. Where that will be remains to be seen.

More and more restaurants are opening for the coming season. This week Aquebogue's Modern Snack Bar reopened on April 12. In business since 1950, this year will be the landmark North Fork eatery's 66th season. Restaurant hours will be 11 a.m to 9 p.m. (Tuesday thru Thursday), 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Friday & Saturday) and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. Modern Snack Bar is located at 628 Main Road in Aqueboque.

Goldberg's Famous Bagels is coming to Wainscott. A banner heralding their arrival hangs outside the shop where Twice Upon a Bagel used to be on Montauk Highway. Construction has been going on for the past week, but no word yet from co-owner Paul Wayne when it will open. Goldberg's Famous Bagels is also in Amagansett, East Hampton and Mattituck.

Pick Your Own Berries on the East End

Summer is prime time for picking berries on Long Island. Berry bushes are low to the ground, easy to access and berries are small enough for little fingers to grasp. It's a great activity for children and adults.  In June it's all about strawberries. Early July is peak season for raspberries. Blueberries and blackberries ripen in late July/early August. The East End is home to five great berry picking farms. Be sure to call the farms ahead of time before heading out, to confirm their hours and berry availability, as inventory sells quickly.

New York State gets Crafty

On Thursday November 13th, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill relaxing regulations on the state's small craft beer, wine and spirits manufacturers. The elimination of some restrictions is to encourage growing interest in locally made alcoholic beverages and increase production. The Craft New York Act will also ease rules governing tastings and allow farm distilleries to operate additional retail outlets. Cuomo also made available three million dollars in grants to market locally produced wine, beer, cider and spirits - as well as promote other tourist activities related to the state's craft alcohol industry. The craft brewing industry is currently booming in New York and here on Long Island. Since 2011 the number of farm manufacturers producing alcoholic beverages has more than doubled. That includes 101 new wineries, 62 new breweries, 49 new distilleries and 8 new cideries in just the last four years.

The East End is coming to Manhattan this summer

Get ready for the first ever "Taste of NY Wine & Food" store in Grand Central Terminal. The shop, slated to open in August 2014, will be on the west side of the terminal, adjacent to the Biltmore Room, across from Track 37. Supported by the Governor's Taste NY marketing campaign, the MTA chose "One Woman Wines & Vineyards" in Southold, on Long Island's North Fork to be the store's operator. "One Woman Wines & Vineyards" says they will feature an abundant display of New York wines and food items produced throughout New York State, such as Brooklyn Brewery, Hudson Baby Bourbon, McLure's and Baldwin Hill. "Taste of NY" was launched last May 2013 as part of New York's biggest tourist campaign in decades, focusing on the state's food and beverage industry, as well as promoting agri-business across New York. "Taste NY" stores have already opened at LaGuardia Airport and the New Baltimore rest area of the New York State Thruway, south of Albany. The move is seen as another step towards positioning New York State's best food and wine onto the world's stage.
